FAQs

Paul "Doc" Hines was a well-loved and respected wining football and basketball coach in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area throughout the sixties, seventies, and eighties. His character was featured in the "Disney" movie, “Remember The Titans.” Paula Hines Lonergan has written this poignant memoir of her father, whom she loved dearly, and appreciated the lessons she learned from him including the value of family, the importance of perseverance, and self-love. This is a fascinating story about life and football, and a touching portrait of a father and his daughter, re-written in a fresh and entertaining voice.

Seven years ago I embarked on a project motivated by my heartfelt certainty of its importance. The year was 2002. It is a book about my father, and his life as one of the coaches featured in the Disney movie, "Remember the Titans," from T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia.

My book, A Titan of Man—A Coach of the Famous ’71 Titans Who Inspired Generations of Young People, was published in late 2003. I presented it to my parents as a surprise on their wedding anniversary. With all my inexperience as a publisher, A Titan of a Man has its own quirks. Yet, I hoped to tell this story with details behind the scenes from an insider’s viewpoint.

It has been over a decade since the movie "Remember the Titans" hit the big screen and over 40 years since T.C. Williams High School was integrated. Since then we have seen the election of an African-American president, an African-American Mayor and an African-American Police Chief in Alexandria, Virginia. I thought it was time to re-visit the strides made in race relations in the city of Alexandria and beyond, as well as to re-cap the positive lessons we can all learn from the movie, from history in general, and from my father’s life.
